Getting Started: An Alkaline Diet

April 1, 2015 -

Nutrition is your first and best defense against cancer! There are six very important dietary changes that every cancer patient should make. Start with an alkaline diet. This will reduce inflammation and improve intracellular pH. A properly constructed alkaline diet is composed primarily of organic leafy green vegetables, herbs and spices, root vegetables, onions, garlic, leek and chives, broccoli, cauliflower and cabbages, beans, lentils and peas and nuts and seeds.

Next, eliminate the sugar from your diet. Cancer cells use more glucose per unit of time than any other cells. Sugar supports cancer progression. If you frequently eat sugar or fruit throughout the day, you are suppressing your immune function while increasing the insulin levels in your body, creating insulin resistance, which has been tied to cancer proliferation.

Glutinous grains cause inflammation and promote cancer progression as well. Avoid high-gluten grains such as wheat, spelt or rye. Instead, try whole, non-gluten grains such as rice, buckwheat, quinoa, millet and amaranth. Be sure to look out for added sugar and processed oils in “gluten-free” prepared products!

When you are fighting cancer it is wise to eliminate all dairy products. Dairy products create inflammation, cause bone deterioration, and promote cancer progression in a similar fashion to sugar. Cow dairy has actually been identified as one of the most cancer promoting foods.

When on an alkaline diet you should only use natural, cold-pressed olive oil, coconut oil or avocado oil – organic whenever possible. These oils provide a soothing and healing benefit to inflamed and potentially cancerous cells in the body. Coconut oil in particular has been shown to have a mild antibacterial/anti-fungal effect, which is helpful for cancer patients with a lowered immune function.

Last, but not least, eliminate alcohol consumption all together. Eliminate the consumption of bottled, canned or frozen fruit juice as these all have high concentrations of sugar and many are highly acid forming. Fresh vegetable juice that you make at home is encouraged.
