University of Maryland Medical Center: Grape Seed

July 17, 2015 -

The use of grape seeds is beneficial to a person’s health as it can be used to treat a range of health problems. Heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and bacterial infections are few of the conditions that can be treated with grape seeds. It all started with the Egyptians about 6000 years ago who believed that grapes had healing powers. Grapes were used as a treatment for a wide range of health problems. They were used as an ointment for the skin, to relieve body pain, treat constipation, etc.

The chemicals in grapes can be the reason for successful health treatments. Grapes contain oligomeric proanthocyanidin complexes (OPCs) which is publicized to be a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants contribute to destroying free radicals, compounds found in the body that destroy DNA and contributes to developing many health problems, which can potentially cause death.

The “French Paradox” is the belief that drinking wine will protect the French from developing heart disease at high rates as compared to US citizens. This belief is not yet proven, however, many researchers speculate it is the combination of alcohol and flavonoids. The American Heart Association and other organizations are not advocates because of the possible addiction and risk of hypertension liver disease, breast cancer, and weight gain.

Researchers have found that grape seed extracts may prevent the growth of breast, stomach, colon, prostate, and lung cancer in animals, but not humans. Grape seed extracts reduce the risk of developing cancer and prevent damage to the human liver cells.
